January Club Newsletter

At the beginning of each month the club newsletter will appear on the website.

News from a variety of contributors should add some interest and hopefully encourage more members to log into the site. Items of interest will be published in the first week of each month. Should any member wish to put an item of news in the newsletter they should forward the info to me at malcolmbwoodward@ntlworld.com  not later than the last day of the previous month.

From The Chairman

Having had a “baptism of fire” over the last few months the Directors are looking forward to a more proactive year for the club.

There are still a few issues to deal with but on the credit side the appointment of Sam Morgan replacing Ben Howarth and the addition of our new apprentice  greenkeeper Jack Blower will certainly add to the upkeep and continuing improvement of our course and for that we must thank our retiring Director of Greens Mike Wyatt. His successor has been handed a strong team of staff along with the return of our Head Greenkeeper Phil Hamer after his forced absence from the club.

We are also in the process of having to replace our club secretary Brett Ross who will retire in March and Gary Walker will take over as the club’s Director of Greens in January.

1906 Club Members Draw 2019/2020

The above draw officially started on 5th November 2019 and will end on 3rd November 2020.

This draw is a valuable source of income to our golf club whilst at the same time giving club members the opportunity to win £60 each week for the cost of £1 per week.

If we could gain some more members then we could increase the weekly prize fund.

If you have not yet joined don't worry. You do not have to be in at the very beginning of the draw. For example, if you were to join before the 31st December 2019 and pay the sum of £44 you would be entered in the draw from 4th January 2020 through to November 2020.

Payment can be made by cheque (payable to Deane Golf Club 1906 Club Draw) or cash to the Secretary office or Alan Dickinson, or you can create a standing order of £4 per 4 weeks.

Once you have paid your subscription then you will be allocated a number for the duration of your membership.

Please help the club by joining the 1906 Club Members Draw.

Thanking you in anticipation.

By way of recognising your valued support, we have introduced a new golf competition in the 2020/2021 golf programme. The 1906 Club Members Trophy which will be played for on Saturday 23rd May 2020. All those playing members of Deane GC who are also a member of the 1906 Club Members Draw will automatically qualify for this competition. (This applies to all playing member categories with the exception of those under the age of 18 years)

Seniors News

Seniors of Deane Golf Club I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the section and set out some initial information and guidance in preparation for the Red Rose Veterans Golf League 2020 matches.

The 2020 season will see a total of 12 participating clubs, the year will see 3 new clubs to the League, Longridge, Penwortham and Turton.

The 2020 season President will be Mr David Terry of Leyland Golf Club, this will determine Leyland as the venue for the 2020 Presidents Day

On taking the role of Red Rose Captain I want to ensure every Senior has the opportunity to take part and play in any Red Rose match, as such I have prepared some items for the Seniors notice board.

These include: -

 2020 Fixtures Diary

Welcome Note to any new Seniors

Location of each competing Club and Travel Information

Dress Code definitions

Gentlemen I am looking forward to 2020 and supporting the Seniors section in any way I can, the Red Rose captaincy I hope will allow me to work together with you all in achieving the very best results for the team and the Club.

BGA Seniors Team – Fixtures will appear on the Seniors Notice Board in the New Year along with other relevant information from Ian.

Seniors Day Out

Ken Brownlow has kindly agreed to organise the senior’s day out which will take place on Wednesday 3rd June 2020 at Prestatyn GC. Please see Seniors Notice Board for details. If you are interested in reserving a place please contact Ken as numbers will be limited.

Our Air Compressor

Our air compressor is perhaps one of the most appreciated pieces of equipment at Deane golf Club, members need it to clean shoes and remove the grass and debris from their buggies, especially in these wet and windy times.  There is no doubt that members miss it when it is not working, so here is the good news, we now have a new compressor!

Our new machine has been kindly purchased by our Seniors Section.  Our thanks must go to them for being so generous! (They also purchased the first machine all those years ago)

Members will have noted that a new type of air hose has been fitted, we hope that these will last longer and be less affected by sun light and the constant bending during use.  Over the years we have fitted many air guns with different lengths of nozzle, the longer ones soon get bent, or broken off.  New guns will be fitted for the start of the new golfing year, but please try to be careful with them! They are not for scraping the grass off the bottom of shoes!

Lastly, a new regime has been put into place regarding maintenance, so we should not expect any more air compressor failures for many years.

Should the worst happen, and the compressed air is off when you finish your round please report the fact to the Secretary, or the Professional. (Or Joanne, who will let the necessary people know).  Often the non-availability of compressed air has gone unreported for several days. Please also understand that the compressor will be off for an hour or so each month for the necessary routine servicing. When this is being done a notice will be put on the air guns informing members that the compressor is off for service.

Lastly, if we have a member who has air compressor knowledge and would like to take over the supervision of our air supply, please let the Secretary, or Chairman Brian Taylor know.
