Deane Golf Club

Club Sections

Deane Golf Club has an enthusiastic membership with all age groups well represented. Each of the various sections offers a full competition schedule, aimed at players of all standards.

Deane Golf Club ‘Seniors Section’ provides a variety of opportunities for members to participate in friendly competitions throughout the year. There are also regular opportunities throughout the week for senior members to meet up for a friendly game of golf.

The club is represented at senior level in the Red Rose League which is made up of ten clubs throughout Lancashire. Matches are played home and away in a fourball betterball format and as such provide an opportunity for club members to play at venues such as Heysham and Knott End. The Red Rose Team finished in fourth position in the 2012 season. In addition the Seniors Section play a number of friendly matches within the Bolton Golf Association adopting the same format as the Red Rose matches. Both teams enjoy a meal with their opponents after each fixture.

The Secretary of the Seniors Section is Malcolm Woodward (telephone no; 01942 790472) and the Treasurer is David Leatham (telephone no; 01257 27430).

A Pocket History Of Deane Seniors

The Seniors Section is a vibrant and well-supported part of Deane Golf Club and represents Deane Golf Club in the Red Rose Veterans League. The league was formed in 1989 with Leyland G.C. being the founder member and prime mover in its foundation. The then Red Rose Radio kindly donated a trophy for competing clubs to play for, hence the name The Red Rose Veterans League, the definition of ‘veteran’ being 60 years of age. After an initial membership of eight clubs there are now ten, which is the maximum allowed in the league.

The league provides an opportunity for members to represent Deane G.C. as far afield as Heysham, Knott End and Hurlston Hall as well as more locally at Leyland, Chorley, Darwen, Bury, Fishwick Hall and Bolton Old Links. Each club elects their Red Rose Captain, who together with the Seniors Secretary is responsible for the arrangement of all the fixtures. Deane G.C. also plays a number of friendly fixtures at senior level within the Bolton Golf Association and as with the Red Rose League every fixture is followed by a meal at the host club.

With our own club the Seniors Section has grown in number with an ever increasing membership reaching the qualifying age of 55 years. There are a number of competitions arranged specifically for senior members. In addition to the Seniors Opening and Closing Day Competitions there is a limited programme of ‘in-house’ competitive golf. Traditionally the Seniors Section has always tried to encourage ‘friendly and competitive golf’ and over the years has made a significant contribution to the club by donating funds to help complete a variety of course improvement projects.

Deane has a long standing Ladies Section running a full range of competitions through Summer and Winter seasons.
